Soda: The Bitter Truth & The Sweet Deception

Today, we’re about to unveil the not-so-sweet truth about a popular yet perilous beverage – soda pop and its deceptive cousin, diet soda.

These drinks may excite our taste buds, but they pose alarming risks to our bodies. So, brace yourself for some startling revelations!

Some Crazy Pop Stats

◼️ Soda and Obesity: According to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, individuals who consumed one or more sugary drinks per day had a 20% higher risk of becoming obese than those who didn’t. The study involved more than 120,000 participants over a 20-year period. This alarming statistic highlights the direct link between soda consumption and obesity.

◼️ It’s Liquid Candy: A standard 20-ounce soda contains about 16 teaspoons of sugar. To put it in perspective, that’s like eating more than five chocolate bars at once!

◼️ Tooth Decay: Soda is one of the leading causes of tooth decay. Its high sugar content and acidity can erode tooth enamel, leading to cavities and gum disease. In fact, a study published in the Journal of General Dentistry compared the mouths of a cocaine user, a methamphetamine user, and a habitual diet-soda drinker, and found the same level of tooth erosion in each of them due to acid.

◼️ Diet Soda Deception: Despite the “diet” label, diet sodas can lead to weight gain, not weight loss. The artificial sweeteners used in these drinks can stimulate the brain’s sugar receptors, leading to increased cravings for sugary and high-calorie foods. A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that people who drank diet soda gained almost 300% more abdominal fat over nine years than those who didn’t.

◼️ Soda and Bone Health: Phosphoric acid, a common ingredient in sodas, can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb calcium, leading to a higher risk of osteoporosis. A study from Tufts University found that women who drank three or more colas a day had significantly lower bone mineral density compared to those who preferred other beverages.

◼️ Soda and Kidney Damage: The high phosphoric acid content in soda has also been linked to kidney stones and other kidney problems. A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health found that those who consumed at least two colas a day (diet or regular) had up to 200% higher risk of chronic kidney disease compared to non-cola drinkers.

◼️ Soda’s Effect on Lifespan: A study in the American Journal of Public Health showed that drinking soda could significantly reduce your lifespan. The high sugar content in soda can lead to cell aging, similar to the effects of smoking. The research found that those who drank a 20-ounce soda daily were almost 5 years older based on cell aging, compared to those who do not drink soda.

◼️ Soda and Diabetes: Regular consumption of soda increases the risk of type 2 diabetes by almost 40-70% compared to those who drank no more than one sugary drink per month.

Soda Companies Definitely Not On Your Side

◼️ Coca-Cola: The Coca-Cola Company is one of the largest plastic polluters in the world. According to a report by the environmental group Break Free From Plastic, in 2020, Coca-Cola was ranked as the world’s number one plastic polluter for the third year in a row. The company produces about 3 million tons of plastic packaging each year, which is equivalent to 200,000 bottles a minute.

◼️ PepsiCo: In 2016, The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer advocacy group, reported that PepsiCo funded health and diet-related research, and the results of those studies overwhelmingly favored the company’s own interests. There’s a growing concern about the conflict of interest when food companies fund nutrition research.

◼️ Dr Pepper Snapple Group: Despite having a recycling logo on their bottles, as of 2020, Dr Pepper Snapple Group only used 7% recycled plastic in its packaging.

◼️ Relentless Lobbying: Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have been involved in lobbying against public health interventions. They were among the dozen food and beverage companies that spent over $37 million in the past year to lobby against the soda-related tax proposals in the U.S., according to a report by the Center for Responsive Politics.

◼️Marketing to Children: Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have been criticized for their relentless marketing practices toward children. They’ve employed techniques like fun animations, celebrity endorsements, and sponsorships of family-friendly events to appeal to younger audiences. This is despite growing concerns about childhood obesity and the role sugary drinks play in it.

The ‘Evil’ Chemicals In Soda Pop

Now, let’s delve deeper into the chemical labyrinth of sodas.

These are considered to be the five most harmful chemicals found in Soda:

◼️ High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): This villainous sweetener, first introduced in the 1970s as a cheaper alternative to sugar, is responsible for the dangerously high sugar content in sodas. Its consumption can lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and inflammation, setting the stage for a host of diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

◼️ Phosphoric Acid: This chemical, originally used as a rust remover, disrupts your body’s natural nutrient absorption process. It competes with calcium in your digestive tract, leading to weakened bones and teeth. Not to mention, it’s associated with an increased risk of kidney disease and accelerated aging.

◼️ Aspartame: This low-calorie artificial sweetener found in diet sodas was accidentally discovered in 1965 while a scientist was testing an anti-ulcer drug. Aspartame is linked to a multitude of health issues, from neurological problems like headaches and migraines to mood disorders, and even cancer.

◼️ Caramel Color: This additive doesn’t just provide the classic cola color, it’s also a defined carcinogen. The process of creating this color produces a chemical called 4-Methylimidazole (4-MEI), which is linked to various forms of cancer.

◼️ Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO): Originally patented as a flame retardant, this chemical is used to keep flavor oils in soft drinks suspended. BVO is a potential hormone disruptor and is linked to neurological impairment, reduced fertility, and organ damage.

The Impacts of Regular Soda Consumption

◼️ Weight Gain: Diet sodas are often marketed as a healthier alternative for weight management, but here’s the kicker: artificial sweeteners trick your brain into thinking you’re consuming real sugar. This false signal can trigger cravings for more sugary and high-calorie foods. Moreover, these sweeteners can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, leading to increased fat storage and resulting in weight gain.

◼️ Heart Disease: The high fructose content in diet sodas lead to an increase in LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which are key contributors to heart disease. Also, fructose is metabolized in the liver, and excessive intake can cause fatty liver disease, a significant risk factor for heart disease. Regular diet soda drinkers are at an almost 30% increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death from heart diseases.

◼️ Bone Health: Phosphoric acid in diet soda can cause an imbalance in the body’s phosphorus and calcium ratio. Our bodies prefer a balance, so when phosphorus levels are high, calcium is pulled out from the bones to restore equilibrium. Over time, this imbalance can weaken bones, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

◼️ Kidney Damage: Again, the high levels of phosphoric acid and artificial sweeteners in diet soda can strain the kidneys. Kidneys play a crucial role in filtering out toxins from our body. Overloading them with these chemicals can cause a significant decline in kidney function over time, increasing the risk of kidney disease and failure.

◼️ Type 2 Diabetes: Regular consumption of diet soda can cause spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels, promoting insulin resistance. This means that the cells become less responsive to insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Over time, this can lead to chronically high blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 67%.

◼️ Metabolic Syndrome: Diet soda drinkers are at a 40% increased risk of metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. These conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and elevated glucose levels. The artificial sweeteners in diet soda can cause glucose intolerance, a key factor contributing to metabolic syndrome.

◼️ Dental Health: The acidic pH of diet soda can erode tooth enamel, which is the protective outer layer of our teeth. Tooth enamel is primarily composed of minerals, which can be worn away by the acid in diet soda. Over time, this leads to cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss.

◼️ Increased Risk of Stroke: Diet sodas specifically can lead to advanced hardening of the arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis. This happens when the high fructose corn syrup in diet soda leads to the accumulation of fats and cholesterol on the artery walls. This can restrict blood flow to the brain, leading to a significantly higher risk of stroke.

◼️ Depression: Artificial sweeteners in diet soda can alter the balance of gut bacteria and interfere with the brain’s mood-regulating chemicals, such as serotonin. This can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and an increased risk of depression by up to 30%.

◼️ Premature Aging: High sugar content in diet sodas can lead to oxidative stress, a condition that occurs when there’s an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. This can damage cells, proteins, and DNA, causing cells to age faster, resulting in premature aging. This is similar to the aging process seen in smokers.

Well, that’s quite a list, isn’t it?

But don’t fret, there are plenty of natural, energy-boosting, flavor-filled alternatives that are both refreshing and beneficial to our health.
