7 Experts Predict the Big Health Trends of 2018 & Beyond.

New years is actually a great time of year. It’s a time-marker that many people use to hit “refresh” on their lives.

So in the spirit of that, and for anyone ready to make health a bigger focus in 2018, we are looking at some of the most novel trends, predicted by experts to catch fire in 2018.

1. Vegetarianism / Veganism:

Finally, there seems to be a real push by the mainstream towards more plant-based, whole-food diets.

Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, and poultry. Then there are more strict Vegans, who are vegetarians who also abstain from eating or using any animal-based products: including milk, cheese, other dairy items, eggs, or honey.

Among the many reasons for being a vegetarian are:

  • overall health,
  • environmental, and ethical concerns;
  • dislike of meat;
  • non-violent beliefs;
  • compassion for animals;
  • and economics.

2. Live-Streaming Fitness Classes:

While live-streaming classes aren’t new, certified personal trainer and kinesiologist Dr. Carrie Burrows believe’s that 2018 will be the year that live-streaming group classes will finally gain momentum. “People are protective of their time, and being efficient by working out at home will see another surge in the online space,” Burrow says.

Beachbody On Demand: This streaming service, from the creators of popular programs like Insanity and P90X, is often described as “the Netflix of the Fitness Industry.” With a subscription, you can watch and work out to hours and hours of streaming videos from all types of workout programs. Plus, there’s a bunch of other added features included like workout calendars and nutrition guides. The service costs $12.96 per month, so it’s certainly much cheaper than many gym memberships.

Daily Burn: This service is great for a more personalized touch. There are daily workouts added each day, which gives the sense of live workouts as you keep up with your trainers. Additionally, there’s a strong community and forum on the Daily Burn, which can help keep you focused and help you with any questions. There’s a one-month free trial and then the service costs $14.95 per month.

DDP Yoga Now: This is a streaming service for yoga beginners, novices, and experts (oh, and pro wrestling fans). DDP Yoga Now offers not just tons of streaming yoga workouts, but also other types of workouts to create an effective workout plan. There’s also nutrition guides and tracking tools to help you keep up with your goals. The service starts at $29.99 for a monthly subscription or costs $107.88 for a full year subscription.

Booya Fitness: Normally the only way to do a boutique fitness class is to crowd into a studio with thirty other people. Booya Fitness is trying to change that by offering boutique classes streaming. They have nearly every class you can think of alongside nutrition guides and personalized workout plans. There’s a month-long free trial and then the service costs $9.99 per month.

Yoga with Adrienne: This is another yoga streaming service, but Yoga with Adrienne is free on YouTube. She helped popularize a trend of trying to do 30 straight days of yoga as a fitness goal. She is a great teacher, and there’s no reason not to try it if you’re interested, since it is absolutely free.

Millionaire Hoy: Every Monday, Millionaire Hoy and his wife post new videos and they run boot camps in Southside Chicago. He posts lots of short workouts and makes it really easy to follow along and to know where to start. If you take a look at his older videos, you can see how much he has improved over time, as the new content he is putting out is really premium stuff. The best part is all of his videos are free on YouTube.

3. Exercising With Pets:

Whether it’s going for a run with Fido or doing a session at a cat yoga studio, certified personal trainer Trinity S. Perkins predicts that exercising with animals will be a 2018 fitness staple. “Being able to combine your two loves — exercise and your fur baby — is a great market, and it’s good for both the people and the animals,” Perkins says.

The fact is any exercise is good and cuts the risk of death by quite a significant margin. In fact, a recent study found that the risk of dying was about 30 percent lower in those who were active even 2 days a week versus those who were inactive.

To put that in perspective, regular exercisers lowered their risk a little more, by 35 percent.

Bottom line, any amount of activity helped cut the risk of dying of heart disease by about 40 percent, compared to being a couch potato. so even walks with the pet are a huge help!

4. Boxing Exercise For All Ages:

2017 has been a huge year for boxing, and Katie Dunlop of Love Sweat Fitness predicts that our love affair with the kick-butt sport is far from over. “There is something about being able to punch a bag that just makes you feel so fierce,” Dunlop says.

Dunlop also states, “I think there will be a huge trend toward boxing in 2018… and not your big box gym cardio kickboxing. Whether at home, in a private gym, or in group fitness classes, there are going to be tons more women learning to bob and weave and throw a one-two punch next [year].”

5.  DNA Testing For Health Insight:

From heritage tracking to allergy tests, DNA testing has become more popular than ever over the past year. “In 2018, I believe more and more people will begin to take their health and wellness insights to the next level with their genetic data,” says CEO and Founder of EverlyWell Julia Cheek. “The promise of genetic testing is that it can tell you more about the way you’re built, so that you can tailor your lifestyle to fit your biology — and ultimately change up your fitness routine to get great results.”

Today we use DNA tests to tell us about all kinds of things — from Justin Bieber’s baby daddy status to the innocence of a man sitting on death row. But genetic scientists are doing more than trying to prove Bigfoot’s existence.

Here are 3 cool things DNA testing can do:

Map your family tree:
A $99 DNA test could give you thousands of new relatives (although if they’re anything like ours, we’re not sure why you’d want them). Sites such as Ancestry.com offer to compare your DNA to those they already have on record in hopes of connecting you to unknown branches of your family tree. Ancestry.com’s test can also tell you your genetic ethnicity.

Predicting the future of your wellness: Genetic testing can reveal risk factors you may have inherited from your parents, such as a high risk for breast or colon cancer. While this genetic risk factor does not guarantee you will get the disease, it does increase your chances; knowing about the risk may help you take preventive steps.

Help you lose weight:
A growing body of research suggests that our ability to lose weight — or gain 10 pounds by simply looking at a piece of chocolate — is shaped in large part by our genes.Scientists have identified several gene variants that may predispose us, and our children, to obesity. Rodent studies have also shown that up to 80% of body fat is regulated by our genes, according to TIME.

6. Wearable Fitness Tracking:

A good fitness tracker is an extremely convenient way to get quick, at-a-glance updates on your activity and encourage you to do more. And, if you’re already active, more advanced models are perfect for keeping tabs on your performance.

They also provide good consistent bio-feedback for heart rates, steps, calorie management, and sleep quality.

A good fitness tracker will also work with a companion app to let you get an overview of your health. This way you can easily identify trends or areas for improvement.

Personally, we here at Happy Body loved using the Apple Watch and Fitbit Ionic, but they are not inexpensive buys. If you want a smartwatch that also does fitness, and are plugged into the Apple ecosystem then the Apple Watch Series 3 is your best bet.

For most people, who want to do some casual fitness monitoring and don’t want to spend too much, the Fitbit Alta HR represents a decent investment in a cheap fitness tracker that can monitor activity and plug you into the excellent Fitbit app.

7. Intermittent Fasting:

Fitness content creator and expert at Maple Holistics Caleb Backe believes that 2018 will be the year of intermittent fasting. “As more and more of a societal focus is placed on metabolism, it only makes sense that consumers and health-conscious individuals will try to find ways to turn theirs in their own favor.

Intermittent fasting is basically an eating pattern where you cycle between periods of eating and fasting. It does not say anything about which foods to eat, but rather when you should eat them.

There are several different intermittent fasting methods, all of which split the day or week into eating periods and fasting periods.Most people already “fast” every day, while they sleep. Intermittent fasting can be as simple as extending that fast a little longer.

You can do this by skipping breakfast, eating your first meal at noon and your last meal at 8 pm. Then you’re technically fasting for 16 hours every day, and restricting your eating to an 8-hour eating window. This is the most popular form of intermittent fasting, known as the 16/8 method.

Despite what you may think, intermittent fasting is actually fairly easy to do. Many people report feeling better and having more energy during a fast. Hunger is usually not that big of an issue, although it can be a problem in the beginning, while your body is getting used to not eating for extended periods of time.

No food is allowed during the fasting period, but you can drink water, coffee, tea and other non-caloric beverages. Some forms of intermittent fasting allow small amounts of low-calorie foods during the fasting period. Taking supplements is generally allowed while fasting, as long as there are no calories in them.
